Why do we think that development is pending?

In 2007, NYC's Dept. of Housing Preservation and Development put out a Request for Proposal (RFP), calling for the development of “a mixed-use development consisting of community, commercial, and residential spaces to be located on 5.8 acres of land along the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn.” In 2008, the city chose Hudson Companies to develop the project, which was planned to have 774 residential units (541 below market rate) and public open space on the waterfront.

The project has still not been built, however, and continues to face two obstacles: a concrete company has not moved off of the site yet, and the polluted land needs to be cleaned up. The concrete company, Ferrara Brothers, is expected to leave after it completes construction at its new site in Sunset Park. After the plant leaves, pollution remediation will still need to be completed before construction can begin.
